Transforming Aquaculture Towards a Sustainable Future: The Innovative FishRISE Project

In June 2024, we successfully concluded FishRISE, a three-year research project that sets a new standard for sustainable aquaculture. This initiative, funded by the Ministry of Scientific Research and carried out in collaboration with 12 partners, including universities, private companies, and research institutes, combines cutting-edge technology and sustainability in both land-based and marine systems to transform the industry.

 

FishRISE addresses the key environmental, social, and economic challenges of aquaculture through innovative solutions. On land, we developed a hybrid system that integrates fish farming and plant cultivation in a controlled and efficient environment, utilizing advanced software that optimizes operations and promotes a circular economy by converting waste into useful biopolymers.

 

At sea, we designed a revolutionary marine cage made of recyclable materials, equipped with technologies such as artificial algae that generate energy and a multifunctional buoy that reduces costs and simplifies operations. This advanced system enables offshore operations in more favorable conditions and ensures sustainability through waste management and compliance with the strictest regulations. Additionally, a high-precision oceanographic model supports operations by predicting changes in marine conditions, helping us make informed decisions and mitigate risks.

 

FishRISE demonstrates that it is possible to combine productivity, sustainability, and environmental responsibility in aquaculture, establishing a benchmark for the industry’s future.
